Many of us take for granted that everyone who sits down in front of a computer knows how to accomplish what we consider basic computer tasks, such as changing the wallpaper on the screen, or switching the screensaver, or even the time between walking away from the computer, and when the screensaver will kick in. To change you computer's wallpaper or screen saver settings, navigate to your opening screen. This is your computer's main screen before any programs have been opened, where the wallpaper already is. Set your mouse pointer on the screen away from your icons that open the programs that are installed on the computer. Right click on the mouse once, scroll down (move the mouse pointer) to the word Properties, and left click once. The Display Properties box will open. It will look like any other tabbed file on your computer. The most common headings of the tabs will include such choices as Themes, Desktop, Screensaver, Appearance, and Settings. Desktop is where you will find any choices for Wallpaper that are installed on your computer. Scroll through those listed under the word Background (these are the names of the actual wallpapers, and as you highlight each one, a sample will appear above to help you choose). When you have found one you like, simply left click once on Apply, and then left click once on OK, and you will find that you have changed the whole demeanor of your computer though something as simple as can be.

On computers that use a desktop GUI, wallpaper is the monitor pattern or picture or other graphic representation that forms the background onto which all the icons, menus and other elements of the operating system are displayed and moved around. An operating system will typically come with pre-installed images to set as the wallpaper and will also allow users to install their own images to be used as the wallpaper. The wallpaper always stays in the background, and all work is done on top of the wallpaper.
